What is Yoga?
Yoga is a science of self-transformation that is thousands of years old. The word “yoga” means “union” in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. We can think of this union occurring between the mind, body and spirit, through the practice of not only physical postures, but practices that regulate breath and mind to create a sense of mental and spiritual well-being.
What should I do to prepare for class?
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing, bring your own yoga mat if possible and do not eat 2 hours before classes.
Why are mantras sung at the beginning and end of each Integral Yoga® class?
Mantras – such as “Om” and “Hari Om” – are subtle sound vibrations with an ancient history and are chanted at the beginning of each class to create a peaceful vibration, and a sense of focus and well-being. Students are not required to chant mantras along with the teacher if they do not wish to.
What are the translations for some of these mantras?
Asato mā sad gamaya
Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya
Mṛtyor māmṛtaṃ gamaya
“Lead me from the unreal to the Real
Lead me from the darkness of ignorance to the Light
Lead me from death to the knowledge of immortality.”
*Mantra of purification from the Upanishads
Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu
“May all beings everywhere be happy and free. May the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.”
* Mantra of benevolence that helps to open the heart to feel joy, solidarity and love
Oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ (pronounced “shan-tee”)

What are some of the unique benefits of the Integral Yoga® style of yoga?
The Integral Yoga style comprises of a comprehensive system for personal transformation – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Each class incorporates postures (asanas), deep relaxation (yoga nidra), eye strengthening practices (netra vyayamam), breathing practices (pranayama) and meditation – all done in an atmosphere that allows the student to go deeper within, without judgment or competition with others or oneself.
